Flavio Bolsonaro, the ultra-conservative candidate and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, came out ahead of the first round of the presidential elections in Brazil on Sunday with 47% of the vote. The outgoing President Lula, who had dominated the polls for months, gathered 45% of the vote. In an ultra-polarized Brazil, Flavio Bolsonaro leaves a priori with an advantage for the second round of 25 October: he could benefit from the votes of the small candidates who took part in the first round.
