Tens of thousands of mourners marched through Madrid on Thursday in tribute to a Spanish pensioner whose eviction sparked national housing protests that culminated in the calling of early elections. The death of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal on Wednesday produced tears and anger in the Spanish capital's emblematic Puerta del Sol square, the epicentre of the movement where hundreds are camping in protest.
Some 20,000 people have left the Puerta del Sol for the house of which the 87-year-old woman was evicted two weeks ago.

In Madrid, marches and homenajes continue in memory of Maricarren Abascal, the retired woman whose eviction ignited protests for housing in Spain. At the Puerta del Sol, where hundreds of people camp to make their claims visible, small tributes have been raised with flowers, candles and messages for Maricarsen. Meanwhile, political opposition sectors refused to observe a minute of silence for 87-year-old women. From the ground, our correspondent Marina Colorado tells us more.
Maricarmen, whose expulsion led to a citizen movement against the housing crisis in Spain, died at the hospital on Wednesday, reports France 24 correspondent in Madrid, Maude Petit-Jové. The demonstrators, gathered on the Puerta del Sol to denounce real estate speculation, learned this in the middle of AG. After a minute of silence, they denounced "murders." The movement continues: the general strike is scheduled for 11 November.

The Madrid Puerta del Sol camp will continue after Congress rejected the two government-driven decrees to face the housing crisis on Friday, a spokesman for the Inquillinas Union announced. The Junts, PP and Vox parties had already anticipated that they would vote against the measures.
The Ayuso who made fun of Maricarren Abascal would also celebrate these young people who get away from the rent and laugh at the stupid character of the landlord
After days of protests and mobilizations in the Puerta del Sol in the case of Maricarren, the Government adopted two housing decrees that include the extension of protection against certain evictions until 2030, the regulation of seasonal and room rentals, and measures to stop the speculative purchase of housing by so-called "vulture funds" until 2028. In addition, there is an automatic renewal of some rental contracts and other measures in favour of tenants. Now, the decrees must be validated by Congress in a plenary session.
"No house, no work, no pension, no fear" was one of the slogans that in 2011 starred in the 15-M movement, in the camp that lasted almost a month
The campsites spend their third night at the Puerta del Sol. Some arrived in the last few hours from different points in Madrid or outside the Community while others resist from the first night, even teleworking
Lemas, banners and handwritten messages reflect the unease about the housing situation in Spain
Hundreds of people spent the night in the square after a protest motivated by the eviction of Maricarsen, a 87-year-old woman who was evicted from the rental house in Madrid.
The Madrid Union of Inquillins and Inquillines raises the tents at the central Puerta del Sol as a measure of pressure against the central government to approve the "Mari Carmen Decree," which seeks to establish indefinite rental contracts, freeze rental prices and impose a moratorium on evictions. The protest broke out after the eviction of an octogenary, which has become a symbol of the housing crisis in Spain.
The Inquillinas union in Madrid highlights the solidarity between the campsites and has prepared activities such as workshops, debates and assemblies: "Today we go back to night"
