Report from Antigua: OAS approves resolution to demand elections in Nicaragua

The Organization of American States (OAS) convened an extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers and signed a resolution to demand that Nicaragua hold free and fair elections, release of the 68 political prisoners, information on the 31 missing persons by the State and restitution of nationality to more than 450 Nicaraguans who have become stateless. The demand comes after President Daniel Ortega announced in July that the country would not hold any more elections. Report by our correspondent, Andrés Suárez Jaramillo.

OAS Calls for Free Elections and the Release of Political Prisoners in Nicaragua

The Organization of American States unanimously adopted a resolution calling for the unconditional release of political prisoners, the restoration of the separation of powers and conditions for free, fair and inclusive elections. The text also creates a follow-up group, but does not provide for specific sanctions against the Daniel Ortega Government.
