India: Curse curse

In India, some 16 women lose their lives daily due to dowry-related violence and harassment, although it has been banned for some seven decades. The dowry is the transfer of property from the bride ' s family to the bride ' s family in exchange for marriage, which is rooted in a society where there is considerable gender disparity, where the birth of a girl is often seen as a burden. But applications don't always stop after marriage. When such requests are not met, women may be subjected to harassment, violence, abandonment or even death.
