France: strike and protest movements involving hundreds of thousands in the midst of strict security measures

France, Thursday, is witnessing protest strikes and movements advocated by trade union bodies, in conjunction with new student demonstrations, in which hundreds of thousands of people are expected to participate throughout the country. These moves are in the wake of weeks of protests on conditions of education and cost-of-living, culminating on 17 October with extensive riots. The authorities declared that they had deployed 70 thousand security agents, while trajectories for demonstrations in central Paris had been banned, triggering trade union criticism.
