Closure of Egypt. Are the authorities equipped with independent media?
Thirty-one media and legal organizations denounced the Egyptian judiciary ' s decision to close Egypt ' s reporting site and to condemn its editor, Lena Atallah, against the background of an accusation of employment without a government licence. Those Egyptian and international bodies considered that judicial governance, which guaranteed the confiscation of the property of the site and imposed a heavy fine on it, could undermine one of the last independent information platforms in Egypt. In a joint statement, the said organizations called upon the Egyptian authorities to grant independent media institutions licences without discrimination, to allow them to operate freely and to refrain from using the licensing provisions of the Media Act to criminalize press work. To talk about this case, we host today from the Egyptian capital.
