In eastern Europe, the Red Army monuments are at the heart of a war of memory.
The destruction in early September of an obelisk dedicated to Red Army soldiers in Bytom, Poland, provoked the anger of the Russian embassy in Warsaw. The large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 triggered a wave of dismantling of the monuments of the Soviet period, varying in scale according to the countries.
