‘Tenzing’ Review: A Remarkable Adventure That Puts the Audience Right Up on Mount Everest, Along with the First Two Men — One a Sherpa, Overlooked by History — to Scale It

"Tenzing" earns its inspirational fervor, but the reason it fits into the new wave of mountain-climbing movies is that the director, Jennifer Peedom, an Australian who’s been making documentaries about mountain-climbing for 18 years, has staged the film with a you-are-there authenticity that’s breathtaking but never showy. She’s a classicist; this is a movie that, in spirit, you could imagine John Huston or Howard Hawks having directed.

‘14th’ Review: Ava DuVernay’s Powerful Sequel to ‘13th’ Turns a Constitutional Amendment into Living History

The movie, I’m pleased to report, exerts the same kind of historical/topical force that "13th" did. DuVernay, while she works in an extremely accessible and mainstream way, has a singular gift for making the nuances of history come alive. "14th" is steeped in history, but it’s not a dry lecture. Instead, DuVernay cuts through the dusty complacency with which we tend to regard the Constitution (just hearing that word can make you feel like you’re back in school) and shows you that the Constitution is a living, breathing document, one that we fail to heed at our peril. Which is more or less what

‘Animals’ Review: Ben Affleck Returns to the Director’s Chair for a Nasty, Compulsive Kidnapping Thriller

It’s for the best that “Animals,” actor Ben Affleck’s sixth outing behind the camera, is being released directly to Netflix — not that this slick, pacy serving of all-star pulp couldn’t or wouldn’t hold one’s attention in the multiplex. But ever since Affleck’s rousing, enjoyable political drama “Argo” won a Best Picture Oscar that it […]

‘Angel and the Badman’ Review: Zachary Levi Leads Angel Studios’ Fitfully Engaging Remake of a John Wayne Vehicle

Inevitably the Angel media company and streaming platform, rebranded from Angel Studios in 2025, has remade the 1947 John Wayne project “Angel and the Badman,” and not just for the angelic title. It’s actually the third iteration; a 2009 Hallmark Channel adaptation, shot in wintry British Columbia instead of the dusty, sandy American West, starred […]

‘The Table: Day and Night’ Review: Café-Based Korean Romance With Kim Min-ha and Han Sun-hwa Is All Froth, No Kick

An artisanal café in a quiet yet fashionable Seoul neighborhood provides the setting for a quartet of seasonal vignettes in Kim Jong-kwan’s romantic anthology “The Table: Day and Night.” Opening this year’s Busan Film Festival, the film — with its star-studded ensemble including Kim Min-ha, Shim Eun-kyung and Han Sun-hwa — will ensure a glitzy […]

‘Artificial’ Review: Luca Guadagnino Has Made the Real Sequel to ‘The Social Network’ — a Brain-Spinning Tech-Geek Docudrama, Brilliantly Acted by Andrew Garfield and Yura Borisov

"Artificial" is a brilliant but playful docudrama, meticulously true to history, that focuses on the founders of OpenAI, notably its CEO Sam Altman (Andrew Garfield). But the tale it tells is much larger than that. "Artificial" goes back to the earliest days of AI and shows you how the technology was invented, how it was developed, how it was dreamed.

‘April X’ Review: Connor Storrie Bides His Time in a Generic Sci-Fi Clone

It would be nice to say that Connor Storrie burns up the screen in “April X,” the star’s first film vehicle released since TV’s “Heated Rivalry” made him hot property, but it would be overstating the case. Appropriating Harrison Ford’s “Blade Runner” frown, among a few other things nicked from that sci-fi classic in this […]
