Lula and Bolsonaro go to the shooting: Is it possible to decrease the Brazilian state?

Following the election results in Brazil, which led to the shooting of the president and candidate of the left, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the ultra-right-wing senator, Flávio Bolsonaro, the debate on the size of the state again becomes relevant, in a regional context where several countries discuss reducing their state apparatus. Bolsonaro has proposed to eliminate at least 10 ministries as part of his government plan. To discuss the subject, we spoke with José Luis Oreiro, professor at the Department of Economics at the University of Brasilia.

Lula has recognized the result as "unexpected" and promises that from now on "a new campaign" begins, but Bolsonaro's margin of manoeuvre to add through alliances and to drive on the right's roots is much greater.

Lamia Oualalou: "Trump cannot get his hands on the Latin American continent without Brazil"

Brazil is holding general elections this Sunday, including its President. The two favourites are the outgoing left-wing president Lula da Silva, 80, and Flavio Bolsonaro, 45, son of the former far-right president. The polarisation of society is very strong, and the election is expected to be tight, following a wretched campaign, without any real substantive debate. Lamia Oualalou, a former correspondent in Brazil for several French media, was the Invitation of Au Coeur de l'Info.
