France's debt reached 3595.5 billion euros in the second quarter of 2026, just revealed INSEE, or 119 % of GDP: a level that had not been reached since 1946. Despite the executive's efforts to save money, one of the first items in the 2027 budget will be debt interest: €77.4 billion in 2026 and €100 billion in 2030. At the same time, thousands of officials protested this Tuesday against the decline in their purchasing power, eroded by fuel prices.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance announced on Saturday that France's debt level would continue to rise to 119.3% of gross domestic product in 2026 and 121.7% in 2027.
Senegal announced a technical agreement with IMF on a $2.2 billion programme for the period 2026-2029. Much expected in a context of a severe debt crisis, however, this agreement still needs to be approved by the IMF's governing bodies.
