Africa's outbreak of the Ebola virus has passed more than 10,000 cases, health authorities said Tuesday, with the vast majority located in Democratic Republic of Congo. There are currently no approved vaccines for the rare Bundibugyo species of Ebola driving the current infections.
DR Congo has reported more than 10,000 Ebola cases and nearly 4,900 deaths. The outbreak involves a virus for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment, complicating efforts to contain its spread.
The town of Masaka in southern Uganda is currently conducting a Phase 1 trial of a vaccine candidate against the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which is circulating in the region. There is currently no approved treatment or vaccine for this strain.
