Tilcayo: the feline that science has just identified in Bolivia
An international team of biologists has identified a new species of wild feline in the cloudy forests of Los Yungas in Bolivia: the Leopardus tilcayo, known locally as tilcayo. The animal had been under care for years in a wildlife shelter, but genetic analyses confirmed that it belonged to a different lineage. The research also made it possible to identify a new subspecies in Peru, while scientists try to determine the distribution and conservation status of these small South American cats.
